Best Smart Speakers

By the Smart Home Pick Pro Editorial Team · How we test & rank

As an Amazon Associate, Smart Home Pick Pro earns from qualifying purchases.

Smart speakers range from $30 voice-control pucks to $250 speakers people actually buy for music. We focused on picks that are honest about that tradeoff: cheap ones for pure voice control, pricier ones only where the sound quality genuinely justifies it.

We also split picks across Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri/HomePod, since the assistant you choose matters more long-term than the speaker itself.

How we picked: We prioritized speakers with a strong track record, wide smart-home compatibility, and a clear best-use case, rather than trying to crown one universal winner. Sound quality notes reflect each speaker's known reputation and driver size class, not in-house lab measurements.

The picks in detail

Amazon Echo Dot (5th Gen)

Top Pick

9.6/10Editor’s score

Best budget pick

  • Small footprint that fits anywhere
  • Built-in temperature sensor for automations
  • Noticeably improved sound over older Dot models
  • Frequently discounted, especially in multi-packs

Watch out Sound is thin at higher volumes — fine for voice and podcasts, not a music speaker.

Amazon Echo (4th Gen)

Runner-up

9.3/10Editor’s score

Best fuller sound on an Alexa budget

  • Rounder design with noticeably more bass than the Dot
  • Built-in Zigbee hub for compatible smart home devices
  • Doubles as a capable smart home hub, not just a speaker

Watch out Bulkier than the Dot, so it needs more shelf or counter space.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to stick with one voice assistant across my whole house?
Not strictly, but it makes life easier. Smart home devices (bulbs, plugs, locks) are often certified for one or two assistants, so picking Alexa, Google, or Siri up front and sticking with it avoids compatibility headaches later.
Are pricier smart speakers actually worth it?
Only if you plan to listen to music or podcasts through them regularly. For pure voice control — timers, weather, smart home commands — a budget speaker like the Echo Dot does everything a $250 speaker does.
Can smart speakers work without internet?
No. Voice assistants process requests in the cloud, so a smart speaker loses voice control (and most functionality) if your internet connection goes down, though locally cached music may keep playing briefly.
